Tips & Suggestions for Preparing the Pole

Easy Spud is designed to work best with a Number 231 handrail.  The flat side of the #231 handrail aligns with the Easy Spud's brake for a secure fit that helps prevent splintering the pole.  The #231 handrail is not shipped with the Easy Spud.  The pole can be purchased at most local hardware or lumber companies, then customized to each fisherman's or boater's needs.

Here are a few tips and suggestions that we recommend for preparing your pole:

  • Length:  Fred uses a 12-foot pole for the waters that he normally fishes.  Depending on the depth of the water that you normally fish, poles 10-15 feet should work fine.  It is probably better to buy a pole that is a little longer than you think you'll need.  You can always trim a long pole to the length that works best for you.  If your pole is too short, it's darn near impossible to make it longer.  [One of the sad facts of life!]
  • Finish:  Fred uses a popular brand name product to treat the pole.  It's a one step varnish, polyurethane, and stain combination.  You should avoid paint or other coatings that could flake or peal and foul the mechanism of the Easy Spud.
  • Top:  A bolt or dowel can be inserted near the top of the pole.  This keeps the pole from dropping through the Easy Spud, when the brake is released.

  • Tip:  The end of the pole should be tapered for ease of use.  Start approximately 5-inches from the end of the pole.
